Alarm in the Village Square.

The chemist shop is located in the north eastern corner
and is one of four shops on the eastern side of the square.
None of the shops is two years old. The Square is a mix of car park and service area for the shops. The shops are open 7am to 9pm seven days a week.Hence the square is always busy.The traffic is a mix
of vehicles, shoppers, commuters and delivery services. A bus service runs along the south side of the square. Throughout the day many children from toddler to teenager
criss cross the square oblivious of the traffic, a serious accident in the making. There have been a number near misses. Not so with the plane tree saplins that designate the limits of the parking area.Two or three of them are destroyed every year. Periodically a couple of police cars will turn up, blue lights flashing, men in uniform rushing from them into the superstore to arrest shoplifters. We always know when there's been a staff change at the chemist's. Because about 8.30am there will be a high pitched ear piercing whine of a burglar alarm, similar to a Jimmy Hendrix guitar rift, but not as tuneful. Some times the police would arrive but the alarm could take up to an hour to be silenced.For consistancy the alarm would sometimes sound off at closing time. Such is life. |
