Beachcombing with a difference.
By Desmond Mackrill
It was a grey winter's day,the tide was out but on the turn. There was a gentle breeze and placid waves dropped their silver crests on the saturated sand of the extended beach. This was a section of Kentish beach as it had never been seen before. About a week ago a freighter had lost it's cargo of prepared construction timber,in the English Channel. There was a fifteen mile long flexible timber platform of variable width rising and falling with the swell of the sea. The tides and currents had brought tons of timber on to the beach. There were hordes of people "beachcombing"for timber. It was Christmas for the carpenter, handyman, Mr & Mrs.DIY and the jobbing builder. The approaches to the beach were choked with parked vehicles, 4x4's, station wagons, small trucks, motor cycles, cycles and prams. There was timber on roof racks, shoulders and prams etc. Very few people were wearing safety clothing, not even sturdy footwear. There were streams of people either one or two to a board making their way from the beach to the promenade and their transport. Every person involved with the timber was stealing it. In the midst of this scramble for timber could be seen many yellow high visibility jackets worn by police officers, customs personnel and local authority officials. The yellow coats deviding their time between public safety problems and advising the timber removers that they were removing property they had no right to and were likely to be required to pay any timber they removed. The route from the beach was as busy as it would on any Christmas shopping day. Back on the beach the "beachcombing" was comming to a close. The tide was comming in and the waves were becomming angry and were dropping heavy baulks of timber indesciminately about the beach. "Beachcombing" was now far too dangerous.
